When implementing a new education plan some barriers may present. For the identified learning need, there should be no significant financial constraints. One identified issue with this learning need is time. This pertains not only to the educator, but the nursing staff as well. Many nurses do not wish to have to come on their day off from work nor stay after their shift to be educated on proper documentation. In order to have the support of management, the benefits of conducting this education and the little to no cost associated will have to be positively presented to management. If the management team is agreement with the educational need identified, the staff is more likely to be engaged and retain the information being presented. By having staff that is knowledgeable in proper documentation, patients will receive more complete and accurate care. In the Peds ED there are many educational opportunities especially those with the patients and their families. The learning needs identified may additionally be viewed as a means of improving our patient satisfaction and also improving revenue by having more complete patient care that is properly documented.

As mentioned, The Peds ED is comprised of 35 nurses that participate in the care of our patients in collaboration with other disciplines. The sample size that participated in the Peds ED was eight nurses from different shifts. The nurses range in experience from one year to more than twenty. Data collection was achieved by having the nurses answer questions. Before distributing the questions, nurses were asked verbally if they were willing to participate. Those who agreed to participate were given the questions. The questions were printed on a sheet with instructions, and participants were given the option of remaining anonymous. The questions included were as follows:

1) What is/are the most pressing educational need(s) of the unit?,

2) What is your solution for this educational need?, and

3) How would you prefer to learn to meet the educational need identified?
