One important story in twentieth-century world history was anticolonialism, as Africans and Asians challenged the dominance of the Western powers. Historians disagree in their interpretations of anticolonialism, with some arguing for religious, ideological, and nationalist motivations, while other assert the importance of economics. Some scholars see the anticolonial movements as complete rejections of the West, while others point out that Western ideas often helped formulate the resistance to the imperial powers. In your informed historical judgment, how and why did anticolonialism develop in the twentieth century? What motivated the leaders of anticolonial movements? Was anticolonialism successful?
