Question - 1) Assuming that the yield or synthesis of dibenzalacetone is 60%, calculate how much benzaldehyde and acetone you need to use to obtain 5.30 g of the final product.

2. Describe briefly how would you determine which isomer (E or Z) of dibenzalacetone is formed, using 1H NMR spectroscopy.

3. While reaction of benzaldehyde with acetone provides the final product (dibenzalacetone) in good yield and purity, the analogous reaction between acetophenone and acetone gives mixture of products which are difficult to separate. Explain why. (Hint: how many aldol condensation reactions can occur in the mixture of acetophenone and acetone).
