Fossil fuels are made of organic compounds. The proteins, carbohydrates and fats in our bodies are also organic compounds. Many things we use such as plastics are also organic compounds. What are organic compounds?

Organic compounds are compounds that contain carbon. Organic compounds are so called because the first ones studied came from living things.

There are over four million organic compounds known at present. Thousands of new ones are made each year. Some advanced chemistry courses are dedicated only to organic chemistry.
