Prompt

We see in Warren St. John's Outcasts United how the rapid demographic changes that occurred in Clarkston led to a wide variety of culturally confusing and incendiary moments-instances in which problems occurred or were exacerbated by differences in culture and language. Consider which actions proved to be the most successful in handling these problems. What do these actions have in common, and what does all this say about the successful functioning of super-diverse communities?

For your fourth paper, your will formulate a thesis that addresses this question. Keep in mind that there is more than one answer. Some questions to consider:

· Do we see how, as Steven Vertovec argues, "top-down efforts to impose contact and understanding between various groups [are] likely to fail"? If so, are Vertovec's ideas of decategorization and recategorization effective? Where?

· Is there a relationship between the functioning of super-diverse communities and individuals caught between two worlds? How might solutions of one issue affect the other?

Procedure

To answer this prompt, look for evidence from specific examples of culture class and examples of solutions. You don't have to limit your examples to Luma Mufleh's soccer program. Think about what it takes for cultures to collaborate and coexist. You may want to think about the driving forces of alienation and fear. Don't just make a list of conflicts and solutions; select moments and explore what they show about these larger ideas.

Decide, through prewriting and brainstorming, how your essay will be focused and structured. Remember, a well-focused essay makes a "single most important point" that is expressed in your thesis; this main idea should address the book. Avoid the temptation to simply "answer the questions" provided in the assignment and procedure sections of this handout. Instead, your essay should be unified and coherent. In your body paragraphs, find examples from the book and analyze episodes prove your thesis. Do not simply summarize.

Your analysis should include the following:

An introduction that includes the author's full name, the title of the book, and a clear thesis statement. A thesis makes an assertion about the text and should be specific enough to be discussed in a well-focused essay. Your thesis may be more than one sentence.

2. Several body paragraphs that support your central assertion. Each of these paragraphs should be well-developed, coherent, and focused on a clear topic sentence. Incorporate quotations from the essays to support your ideas then comment on the quotations by how they support your assertions and relate to your overall thesis. Instead of linearly stepping through the book, I suggest selecting aspects of theme or topic as your subtopics. This way you can better avoid summary.

3. A conclusion that communicates your thesis in a new way and emphasizes the importance of your topic to the reader. Use a quote from the text, or leave the reader a question to think about. Avoid personal examples and other anecdotal data.

Audience

Assume that your reader has not read the book. You should avoid summarizing in this essay, and instead focus on providing evidence for analysis. Avoid using, "you," "we," and, "I."

Citation Style

Use MLA format for quoting and paraphrasing. Use transitions. Avoid naked quotations. A Works Cited page IS required.

Formatting

4 pages. Typed (double-spaced) in standard font (for example, un-italicized, un-bolded, black, 12-point Times New Roman). Leave one inch of margin around the page. Left justify. Include your name, the instructor's name, the title of the course, and the date in the upper-left corner of the first page of each essay. Include page numbers on the bottom center of each page. All papers must be submitted as .docx Word attachments. All late papers automatically drop 10% for each calendar day they are late, and they may only be turned in up to five days late. If you turn in a paper in after the time that it's due on the due date (ex. the paper is due at class time and you submit it afterwards, it will be reduced by 10%).
