Problem 1: Brainstorm construction considerations which could affect the selected size of a bearing plate. List as many issues as you can think of, but no less than three.

Problem 2: A wide flange steel beam, with a 5" flange, is constructed perpendicular to an 8" solid grouted CMU wall (f'm = 1,350 psi). If the beam end reaction is 1,800 pounds dead load and 9,600 pounds live load and the plate width, W, is 6", as shown in 1/HW3-1, determine the minimum bearing plate length, L, considering:

a) Code allowable local bearing stress

b) Constructability

What plate length would you specify on the drawings for this beam and why?

Problem 3: The beam described in problem 2 is repeated along the wall length at 8'-0" on center. Assume that each beam has the same end reaction. What is the axial force in the wall 9'-0" below the beam bearing elevation, in plf, due to D + L from the beams only? Neglect wall self-weight.

Problem 4: What is the radius of gyration, r, of the column cross section shown in 2/HW3-1, taken about the x axis?

Problem 5: An unreinforced, 16"x16" (NOM) solid grouted column with f'm = 1,500 psi supports both axial and flexural forces and is shown in section in 3/HW3-1. Assume Portland cement lime mortar, type S. The unbraced height of the column is h = 14'-0"; the loading is P = 30 kips, and M = 2 ft-kips. Does the column meet code?
