submitted on time, one page, single spaced, correct letter format (names, addresses, date, proper salutation)

  • focuses on benefits to the reader
  • opens with specific request to be hired/considered for hire
  • presents specific qualifications and skills
  • links qualifications to the job sought
  • references the résumé in the body of the letter
  • Contains the appropriate ENCL entry below the signature
  • spells résumé correctly (with accent marks, not as the word "resume" that means "begin again")
  • closing facilitates action
  • tone is positive, business-like; words are precise, accurate
  • sentences are concise, fluent, active voice, varied
  • contains no proofreading, grammar, or construction errors

RÉSUMÉ (Paper 4b)

  • submitted on time, no more than two pages long
  • format follows model and discussion provided in Conference topic
  • information is accurate and complete (no made-up information)
  • information focuses on goals, is positive, and relevant
  • wording is in noun phrases and action verbs, not whole sentences
  • avoids personal pronouns; no mention of salary and benefits
  • contains no proofreading errors
  • Includes these components: Locator section, Languages/licensure/certification section, Testimonial, Qualification Summary, Experience section, Education and Training Section
  • Does NOT contain Awards section, Objective, or References Available section.

The résumé should contain the spacing and formatting required of an actual document.

FOLLOW-UP LETTER (Paper 4c)

  • submitted on time; one page, single spaced, correct letter format (names, addresses, dates, proper salutation)
  • format follows model in textbook and Conference tips
  • opening expresses thanks for the job offer, asks for more time to consider
  • middle explains the need for more time (as specified in the instructions), expresses interest in company and the job
  • closing allows for quick decision if request is denied and asks for confirmation of decision if granted
  • contains no proofreading, grammar, or construction errors
