Letter or e-letter to a prospective, new donor

Use your Audit Organization as your frame of reference.

1. Speaks to the reader from the signer.

2. Introduces the organization very briefly, in a way that personalizes the appeal to this potential new donor. [This person's name was suggested by a member of the board of directors; this person has subscribed for two years, but never donated; this couple responded to an audience survey last year....]

3. Talks about the benefits the donor will receive, rather than the needs of the organization.

4. The benefits of becoming a first-time contributor are very clear, and/or the reader is directed to an accompanying brochure that explains more details about the benefits of various giving categories.

5. Asks for a specific amount of money - makes no apology about this being a solicitation.

6. Formatted for easy reading - using italics and bullets.

7. Establishes urgency - a reason for acting now!

8. Powerful writing style.

9. Response device or response instructions are clear.

10. Letter is as long or as short as needed to make the case.
