PART II

In the second part of your exam you will analyze a graphic or political cartoon produced during the Black Power Era.

In your essay, you will think about the ways in which the visual you are assessing emphasizes specific historical narratives about people of African descent in the United States and why these mattered during the 1970s.

Your response should be no more or less than two paragraphs. A well written and well-organized response, supported by historical evidence will be worth six points.

PART II

The third section of your exam will require you to complete the following short answer essay questions below. Your response here should be two paragraphs. Your answers must be clearly written and fully supported with historical evidence.

1) Why are African American boys more likely to be diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and other brain disorders early on in their education? What impact does this have on educational achievement nationwide?

2) Why is "strength" a pivotal part of African American girls' coming of age experience? In what ways is the practice of teaching young African American girls to be strong helpful and harmful to their transition into womanhood?

3) Write a short essay discussing the ways in which racial discrimination impacts the physical and psychological well-being of African American men and women.

4) Write an essay in which you explain sociologist Charles Cooley's "looking glass self' theory, then tell why this theory of self construction is useful for understanding racial identity construction.

5) Why did African American Psychology emerge in the 1960s? What were some of the objectives of its early founders?
