Part 1. Every organization has current leaders and emerging leaders. During your multiple contacts with the organization, you will have met at least two people, and likely more.

Please appreciatively take a look at your principal and the other staff person you interviewed, from the perspective of assessing their leadership talent. 

I would use the Big 5 Personality Factors as your criteria (openness to inquiry/experience, conscientiousness, extroversion/communication skills, agreeableness/tact, and stability under stress/non-neurotic). 

Part 2. Look around your organization and identify at least one person, not currently in a major leadership role, whom you believe "has what it takes" and should be considered for a future leadership role. Tell me why.
