Part -1:

In Chapter 1 of Theatrical Worlds (pages 39-45, "How to Read a Play,") you read about the Greek tragedy Oedipus by Sophocles. You will continue with this story and read the play Antigone by Sophocles. This play can be found as a hard copy in Roesch Library or online.

In addition to your reading, view the excerpts from the National Theatre's contemporary version of Antigone and their short videos of introduction to Greek Theatre and Tragedy below.

4. How do you see Antigone relating to Rites.Rights.Writes. and this year's this year's theme, "It's your Nature"?

5. Discuss the National Theatre's contemporary version of Antigone. Did you like it? Why/why not?

6. After learning about Greek tragedy, how do you see it relating to the dramas/characters (plays or movies) of today?

7. How do you see Greek Theatre as alike or different when compared to the theatre of today?

Part -2:

Assignment: August Wilson was a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright who wrote about the African-American experience in the 20th century. Read his playFences (one of ten plays in his Pittsburg Cycle). You are responsible for securing the script. Check the catalog at U.D. Roesch Library. If the library does not have the play in-house, you should check to see if it is available through Ohio Link or as an electronic copy.

On pages 147-8 in Healing Myths from the Ethnic Community, or Why I Don't Teach August Wilson by Jackie M. Roberts from Theatre Topics, Volume 20, Number 2, September 2010, pp. 147-156, Roberts says
