Paper Two
For your second paper, I would like you to look for an article or essay that addresses a topic with widespread impact. Once you have identified the article that will be the start point for your paper, I want you to consider how the author is presenting and considering the topic. A good place to start is a review of newspapers, magazines, or even, a reading in our text. As you consider the content, also take time to ask the following questions about composition:
- Who is the audience for this piece of writing and how does this inform the crafting of this piece?
- Who is the publisher of this piece of writing?
- How does the author order their discussion of this piece and is it effective?
- What types of points are raised in this article? Are they fully and equally discussed?
- Look at the choices of tone, style, and diction. Are these choices consistent with the intended audience?
- Is there an emotional appeal in this article? Is it effective? Why or why not?
- Are the conclusions reached well-supported and logical?
- Compare this essay or article to others that you have read. Think about the choices in comparison and independently. How do the choices of structure, tone, and language influence meaning? What are the effects of these choices?
For your paper, I would like you to analyze the author's handling of the essay's topic and meaning as well as structure. Consider how these things may influence its ability to impact an issue in the world.
General Requirements:
- MLA format and citation style
- Two outside sources
- A thesis driven essay supported by well-developed points with textual support
- Three or more pages in length
- Participation in peer review
