Paper One

Part 1

Research: Do a search on the term "normalization of deviance" that we found in the article "What Was Volkswagen Thinking?"

For scholarly articles:

• Check Google Scholar. You can find both journal articles and books.

For journalistic articles:
Do a Google search for your case.

• Look for longform articles from major magazines or newspapers. These may be focused on Vaughn's work or show how her applies to a variety of contexts.

• Look for articles that might show how others have used the term or provide examples for you.

Prepare: An Annotated Bibliography of (at least) the 5 best scholarly and 5 best journalistic sources you found. You can include more if you think you will need them.

Writing: In two or three double-spaced pages, explain what Vaughn means by "normalization of deviance." Provide at least two "thick examples" that will illustrate this concept.

Part 2

Research: find introductory articles about the following cases of corporate misconduct or corruption: the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, or the General Motors ignition switch cover-up. Use these articles to help you decide which of the events you want to research more deeply.

Conduct a search for sources that will allow you to explain what happened in these cases of corporate misconduct or corruption. You will need to know what happened, when and where it happened, who was involved. You will need to pay attention to how the event unfolds from its beginning to today. You can start by reading about your case on Wikipedia, but you will need to do a thorough search to create a clear and reasonable detailed account of events.

Of course, you will search for the case itself. However, you should also pay attention to the experts who "speak" in these articles or books. Check the Works Cited or References pages for names of experts that you can add to your search plan. Look at the sources identified in the Works Cited/References page to find both experts and articles to add to your search.

You will also want to look for alternative explanations of the misconduct or corruption.

For scholarly books and articles:

• Check Google Scholar. You can find both journal articles and books.

For journalistic books and articles:
Do a Google search for your case.

• Look for longform articles from major magazines or newspapers. These may lay out the questions or debates important to your case. You can also find experts who may have written on your case.
• Look for news articles that can search as factual sources. These may help you see how the case changes as it unfolds.
On the web:
• Look for archives on the internet.
• Look for primary documents (corporate documents, press releases, government reports)

• Look for graphs, charts.

Prepare: An Annotated Bibliography that includes at least 10 the scholarly, journalistic, archival, and primary sources you found. You can include more if you think you will need them.

Write: Write 2-3 double-spaced pages in which you use expert sources to lay out the events of your case: what happened, when and where it happened, who was involved.

Part 3

Write: Use the research you've done to take a position on the following question: Do you think the concept of "normalization of deviance" explain your chosen event? Take a position on this question and use the work you've done in Parts One and Two to show your reasoning. This section of your paper should be at least 2 double-spaced pages.

***Complete Draft: Pull Parts One, Two and Three together into one paper. Prepare an Annotated Bibliography
