This assignment requires you to answer one of the following questions utilizing research, bibliography, and in-text citations. You can choose one of the following topics or choose your own (a self-generated topic must be approved):

1. How does the scientific revolution or the Enlightenment change the nature of European thought and society?

2. Evaluate the causes and outcome of the French Revolution.

3. How does the Industrial Revolution reshape Europe?

4. Evaluate the causes and outcome of either German or Italian nationalist movements.

5. How does the period colonialism and imperialism shape Europeans attitudes towards non-Europeans?

6. Analyze the reasons for the rise of socialism and communism in Europe in the late eighteenth century.

7. Analyze the relationship between the First and Second World Wars.

8. How do the two world wars lead to the collapse of Europeans empires?

9. Why does Europe move towards greater cooperation in the post War period?

10. Why does communism collapse at the end of the twentieth century?

A thesis paper must argue a point and not review the details in a general way. Every section should refer back to the argument in the thesis that you are trying to prove. It is important to keep this in mind as you are structuring your paper.

  • Citations and a bibliography are required consisting of a minimum of
    • Three JSTOR articles: May not include videos, book reviews, newspaper articles, encyclopedia articles, study guides, or texts in websites that are not peer reviewed.
    • One textual primary source: This source may be found through your research, or it might have been republished within one of the secondary sources that you are using.
    • The textbook
    • One additional scholarly book that includes many footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical citations

Term Paper Grading Rubric:

To receive full credit the term paper must meet the following requirements:

1. An introductory paragraph that includes the thesis of your paper

2. The thesis must be an arguable statement, thus the paper cannot be a chronology that lacks analysis.

3. State and prove an argument that supports the validity of your thesis. Demonstrate critical thinking, historical accuracy, and evidence of research in your proofs.

4. Citations used effectively to support your thesis

5. Include a concluding paragraph.

6. Use of a minimum of six sources as stipulated in the project parameters.

7. A bibliography and citations in proper format. You are welcome to use citation generators. Links to reliable citation generators are provided on the website of the Middlesex County College Library.

Paper Process Work:

You will be required to hand in parts of this paper throughout the course in order to allow me to give you feedback. Please take advantage of this as it will help you to improve your paper. On the day that the bibliography is due, you are required to email me the title of one JSTOR article that you will be using in your paper and explain why it is useful. This will help you in your proper usage of sources. Any student that hands in a rough draft of their paper will get written and feedback.
