Paper Assignment

For this paper, you will be writing a 3-4 page persuasive essay. Your topic will be based on one essay from your readings from Chapters 8, 9, or 10 in Perspectives on Contemporary Issues. Choose one essay from Chapters, 8, 9, or 10. Then, take a position on an issue inspired by this essay. The goal of your essay will be to persuade your readers to adopt your point of view on the issue. You will argue your position using two supporting claims to prove your position on the issue. You will also include a counterclaim from the opposing viewpoint and you will rebut that counterclaim, showing why your position is better/stronger/more correct than the opposing viewpoint. You are required to use a minimum of 4 sources for this essay. One of the sources must be the textbook essay that inspired the paper's position. The other three sources can ONLY come from the Peirce library databases or primary sources.

Research the subject of the influence of violent video games on behavior in young people, drawing on Karen Sternheimer's "Do Video Games Kill?" Possible sources include any of Sternheimer's own books on the subject, including her most recent one, Pop Culture Panics: How Mortal Crusaders Construct Meanings of Deviance and Delinquency (2015).

3 resources from Peirce library sources to make it easier for you.

Option #1: Traditional Argument Structure

Intro Para: Develop a hook and thesis. The thesis should be a two-sentence thesis. The first sentence should introduce the two supporting arguments for your position. The second sentence should introduce the counterargument and rebuttal.

Body Para #1: Argument #1. This paragraph should explore the first supporting argument for your position on the topic.

Body Para #2: Argument #2. This paragraph should explore the second supporting argument for your position on the topic.

Body Para #3: Counterargument and Rebuttal. This paragraph should explain the opposing viewpoint on the issue, also known as the counterclaim or counterargument. Then this opposing viewpoint should be disproved or negated through the rebuttal using your position on the topic to show why the opposing view is wrong/weak and your position is stronger/better/correct.

Conclusion Para: Sum up all the arguments, counterargument, and rebuttal. End with a concluding technique.
