Paper 2 Jimi Hendrix's Star-Spangled Banner: An American Icon

There are two separate topics that you can do for this paper. After that, you can decide which one you like to best to expand and develop for your final draft. In the end, you will be writing a 3-4 page paper which must include at least one additional research source besides the podcast or short story, and this source must be properly cited in your text and in a Work Cited entry, following MLA guidelines. Please check out the Purdue OWL and ask me if you have any questions. As with your first paper, this one should be well organized, with an introduction that catches your readers' attention and a conclusion that adds an element of personal reflection, summation of key points, or speculation about the future. In each paragraph of the body of your paper, you should provide specific evidence from the text with some commentary that builds on your central argument or idea. Keep in mind that you will be sharing some of your work with other students.

Topic 1: An Argument Write an argumentative paper on the topic of whether Jimi Hendrix's performance of the Star-Spangled banner should be considered an American icon. Be sure to define what you think an American icon is. Give specific evidence about the performance, its context, its reception, and its influence. You might consider specific evidence about Hendrix as a person and about the song itself. Be sure to offer some quotations or evidence from the podcast. A good argumentative paper often includes a counterargument-a consideration of why someone might take the opposite point of view, which is presented and then refuted.

Topic 2: A Comparison This paper will be more of a personal paper which compares your experiences with those of Victor in Sherman Alexie's story "Because My Father Said He Was The Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play the 'The Star Spangled Banner' at Woodstock." Describe how Hendrix's song connects Victor with his father and compare that to an experience you have had where you a particular piece of music has meant something special to you, perhaps individually or perhaps as part of a relationship. Consider how music can help someone relate to another person, place, idea, or time in one's life. Try, as well, to connect the piece of music you have chosen to a particular time in history. Remember that a good comparison paper links each element very closely, in the same or consecutive paragraphs. In this case, the evidence in your paper should be fairly equally balanced between the story and your own experiences.

Be sure to follow these directions or suffer the stated penalty.

1) At the top left hand corner of your paper, you should have your name, the class number, your professor's name, the date, and the title of your paper. -5

2) Your final draft must be typed and double-spaced with one-inch margins.

3) Your paper must be at least three full pages long.

4) Your paper must include citations from at least one additional source that you found through our library's database.

5) Your paper must have the proper in-text citation according to MLA guidelines.

6) Your paper must have a properly formatted Work Cited entry according to MLA guidelines.

7) Your paper must be turned in by the due date.

8) If you miss the deadline, your paper must be turned in within a week.
