References

If you use another person's ideas or words, you need to cite your source. The alphabetized list of works cited gives information for each of your sources. You must cite any paraphrased content or another writer's idea or statement. Cite any words or ideas you got from your reading that cannot be considered common knowledge. The last page of your essay must be the Works Cited page. It shows all the works cited in your essay. Include parenthetical citations within the text of your essay to indicate your sources. These citations refer to the list of works that appears at the end of the paper. For example: Herschel wants to stay true to his religion, thus "he hides his earlocks" (Becker 54). The citation (Becker 54) informs the reader that the quotation originates on page 54 of a text by an author named Becker. Consulting the last page (Works Cited), the reader will find the following information: Becker, Jurek. Jakob the Liar. Translated by Leila Vennewitz, Plume, 1999.

The Works Cited page might list two works by the same author. In this case, the parenthetical reference should include more information in order to indicate which of the two works you are referring to. A shortened form of the title is sufficient. E.g. (Becker, Jakob 54). If the context makes it clear which document on the Works Cited page the reference comes from, no further identification is needed. For example: Becker explains why [Herschel] "hides his earlocks" (54). Fit short quotations into your own sentences. Enclose the quoted passages within double quotation marks. Put the passage reference before the punctuation of the phrase or clause to which it refers. If you cannot integrate the quoted passage into your own sentence, use a colon Use a block• uotation whenever a quotation is more than four typed lines long. The block quotation does not need quotation marks (except when your quoted material includes dialogue). Indent the whole passage one inch from the left margin. The parenthetical citation follows the closing punctuation mark.

General Rules of an MLA Works Cited Page

Begin the Works Cited page on a new page. Title the Works Cited page Works Cited. Center the words Works Cited at the top of the page. List the entries in alphabetical order by the authors' last names. Indent the 2nd line and all subsequent lines of each entry. Double space all citations. Leave a period at the end of each entry. Use italics for titles of books and films. Put the title of a short story or fairy tale in quotation marks.
