NonverbalTheory Application Paper

INSTRUCTIONS

This paper will introduce one compelling nonverbal theory that you have examined and fully researched. For this project, you may work with one (1) classmate (if you so choose.

You will (a) define, describe, and evaluate a nonverbal theory of communication, (b) present findings from at least three (3) scholarly research studies relating to the theory, and (c) discuss the ways this theory can be applied to an SEU student's life. I urge you to select a theory and a topic that you consider to be an interesting or fascinating aspect of human relations.

How to accomplish a cohesive paper:

1. Introduction: Introduce the theory you will be exploring and give a brief introduction of the points and analysis you will review in your paper.

2. Body:

a. Section 1: The paper should begin with a description of this theory including its history and prominent authors who have defined or promoted it. To accomplish this task, you should first summarize the assumptions of the theory. Then, link those assumptions to aspects of a nonverbal behavior or phenomenon in communication and explain how the theory accounts for the phenomenon.

[You must research this information in a more thorough way than finding a single website with a quick summary and rewriting that. ] A good place to start is the SEU library databases or Google Scholar, which can be used to find current articles and studies about this theory.

i. Make sure to address the following:

1. Describe the theory in terms of assumptions and main concepts that are essential to understand the theory.

2. How would the theory account for nonverbal communication seen in people or their relationships?

3. What does this theory suggest are the reasons for the nonverbal communication behavior to occur?

4. What would the theory suggest as a means of addressing the nonverbal communication phenomenon [fix it/change it/understand it]?

b. Section 2: Then, you must select three (3) scholarly research studies (please ask if you do not know what this means) that relate to the theory.

i. Make sure you address the following:

1. You will describe the topic of each,

2. Describe the goal of the study and the chosen methodology to reach this goal of understanding a nonverbal communication phenomenon.

3. Finally, tell us the results, and implications of each research study.

4. You can format this section as 1,2,3, 1,2,3, 1,2,3 or as 111, 222, 333 for the three studies under analysis.

c. Section 3: Compare/contrast the ways this theory may be used to understand a student's life. How do the studies you read help you understand the nonverbal behavior of your peers or yourself? [ Don't go too far into personal stories here] Lastly, talk about the aspect of prediction and how you would predict behavior/thoughts/outcomes in specific examples you have experienced or seen in others (i.e. friends, family, or media) by using this theory.

3. Conclusion: Make sure to review main points you make in your paper and the overall ‘take-away' from your arguments.

• Requirements: 6-8 pages,double-spaced, with 1" margins, in Times New Roman, Gill Sans, or Calibri font (size 12), and uses at least6 SCHOLARLY SOURCES (Research articles or books). Use APA citation format (parenthetical in the body of paper and references list at the end).
