New Criticism/Formalism:

Examine any single element (setting, narration, symbolism, plot structure, irony, tone/diction, etc.) of a story, The Enormous Radio by John Cheever, or play in detail. How is understanding this element important to developing a greater understanding of the meaning of the work? In what ways does the element advance themes in the work? What are the dangers of not paying attention to or misinterpreting this element? What would be lost if this element were absent or changed? You might choose to focus on structures that you find effective and/or satisfying or structures that are confusing or difficult for you to appreciate.
