Peer Review(Peer Review Form)

7 points

  • You are required to give feedback to your partner on the first draft of his/her paper.
  • There will be a detailed discussion in class of how to conduct a constructive peer-review with an example or two.

The goal of Peer-Review:

-        To foster your critical thinking skills through this self-reflective activity.

-        To develop and ability to clarify and strengthen your own ideas from the strengths and from identifying and articulating weaknesses in your peer's paper

You need to follow the guidelines given below: (There will be a Peer-Review Form.)

1.      Read a draft all the way through before you begin to make comments on it. Take the time to read the whole paper in order to get all the points the paper makes.

2.      Point out both the strengths and weaknesses of the draft.

3.      When you find something unclear or you cannot understand, state it and offer appropriate and constructive comments. You can make suggestions about how to improve the paper.

4.      Your comments should be text-specific, meaning that when you make comments on certain points or sentences, you need to refer to the specific points or sentences.

5.      Do not make comments on grammatical aspects.

6.      Before you give your review with comments to the author or submit to the instructor, reread your comments to make sure they are clear enough for the author to understand.

Please be considerate when making comments. Do not say, for example, "I don't understand this or that." Instead, say, "Would you please clarify this?"

The following are aspects you need to have in your Paper. Each missing aspect will result in point reduction.

a.      State the issue/topic and General information of the issue you are going to discuss in your paper. If you discuss poverty, for example, discuss the reality/status of poverty in USA or in any other country.

b.      State the causes of poverty and the effects of poverty.

c.      State why the issue, in this case causes and/or effects of the issue, is important to discuss or pay attention to.

Body Paragraphs:

Everything discussed in Body paragraphs should be connected to your thesis (the causes/effects of the issue). Do not start a cause/effect or do not omit any point you made in Introduction.

a.      Each paragraph should have a point (topic sentence) and/or evidence/example(s). A topic sentence tells what you are going to discuss in the paragraph, in this case, one cause/effect in each body paragraph.

b.      Transition from paragraph to paragraph should be smooth.

c.      Every point you make should be supported with specific and detailed discussion and evidence/example(s)

d.      At the end of each paragraph, you may have a brief wrap-up sentence to tell how the point of the paragraph supports/is connected to your thesis.

e.      When you cite or paraphrase professional works, please make sure to include them in text and Works Cited page(s).

Conclusion:

There are different ways of wrapping up the paper.

a.      Restate what you have discussed in Introduction and Body; OR

b.      Make suggestions for solutions to the issue in discussion along with key points of your points.
