Museum Art Analysis and Presentation

Rational

Research is an important approach to broadening knowledge. Learning to present information orally and in writing are important skills for any career. Visuals help communicate ideas in any field and are especially important in the visual arts.

Objective

• Using vocabulary from the elements of art and principles of design, you will be able to analyze a piece of art work and the artist who created the art.

• Present the results of your research in an interesting way so other students become interested in your artwork and the artist and your experience visiting the museum.

How to Proceed

• Visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art. (Free with your student i.d.)
• Choose a work of art to analyze. You will also present on the artist.
• Take a picture of a work of art that you will analyze. You might also want to take a picture of a group of artworks if the artwork you analyze relates to a group of images. (probably no flash)
• Take a selfie with the work of art behind you (proof you were there).
• Create a 7-10 minute presentation analyzing the work of art. Briefly summarize biographies:

- Geographic location
- Time period (dates of birth, death, etc.)
- Education
- Motives: Why did the artists paint in this style (or with this theme)
- The movement this artist was a part of
- Characteristics, styles, techniques or subject matter of his or her artwork
- Historical or Social context, briefly summarize the photographer's time and place.

• Analyzing the Artwork:

- Use the vocabulary of the elements of art and principles of design to describe what is happening in - the work of art.
- Talk about the medium or media used; Oil, Acrylic, Pencil, Watercolor, Clay, etc.
- What is the subject matter?
- Where is the viewers point of view?

Is it representational or abstract (non-objective)?
