Lithium batteries are a result of some bizarre chemistries, which are not necessarily taught in freshman chemistry. At the cathode of a lithium ion battery is another bizarre chemical, typically lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2). The two half cell reactions can be expressed as follows:

Li+1 + e- + C6 à LiC6                          Eo = -2.84 V

Li+1 + e- + CoO2 à LiCoO2          Eo = +0.25 V
