Lindane is a popular pesticide throughout the south because it is a persistent chemical (i.e. it remains in the environment and offers protection for a long period of time). It is effective in protecting pine trees from the Southern Pine Bark Beetle, which can kill a tree within 3 days of infestation. Lindane is also used to treat lice and scabies in some countries. Lindane's persistence is problematic in areas where runoff feeds livestock or crops, or near schools, playgrounds, etc. If you wanted to detect Lindane in a complex sample, with minimal interference from hydrocarbons, what detector would you use?

An internal standard (n-bromodecane) is used in Lindane measurements. What is the elution order of lindane and the internal standard if a polar stationary phase is used?
Why are internal standards used?
