KVR Critical Essay [Common Assignment]

The learning outcomes of the KVR Sophomore Inquiry include the development of skills in scientific literacy, in value literacy, and in the ability to identify and analyze fact-value relations. They also include the development of critical thinking and writing skills. This critical essay is an opportunity to apply what you have learned over the term about knowledge, value, and rationality.

During the term, you have explored one or more methods of rationality from the humanities, sciences, and/or social sciences. Part of your task will be to apply this method to the assigned texts, demonstrating how it serves to categorize and employ fact and value claims in argumentation and justification.

Read [insert name of text(s)] carefully. Your critical essay must focus on the assigned text as the task is to interpret and understand it. For the purposes of this assignment, please do not refer to outside sources.

Your goal is to identify the text's central claims, the author's major arguments that support these claims, and the evidence that supports these arguments.

You should also think carefully about the purposes of the text (what is the author trying to accomplish, who is the audience) and about the context and background knowledge that it presupposes. If relevant, you should also reflect on the author's methodology and rhetorical strategies.

Your critical essay must include the following steps:

1. In the introductory paragraph, clearly identify the topic and the major claims.

2. Identify the central factual claims with careful attention to their organization and structure. Explain the methods and reasoning strategies that establish and justify these claims as factual. [Two to three paragraphs]

3. In two to three paragraphs, identify the central value claims with careful attention to their organization and structure. Explain the methods and reasoning strategies that establish and justify these claims as establishing values. [Two to three paragraphs]

4. Identify the relations between fact and values. The forms of rationality and methods of inquiry you have covered during the term may be relevant here for explaining how facts and values relate and come together in argumentative structures. [Three to four paragraphs]

5. Critically assess the article's use of facts, value, and fact-value relations in supporting its major claims. Given what you have learned during the term about models, arguments, and the techniques for evaluating them, determine if the facts are well-supported, if the values articulated are relevant to the topic and justified, and if the arguments and methods employing fact and value claims are valid and sound. Does the evidence and do the arguments set forth in the article justify the conclusion? [Three to five paragraphs]

6. Conclude your critical essay with a brief summary of the major points that you have established. [One paragraph]
This is an academic assignment and you are expected to follow the conventions of academic writing. Critical analyses will also be graded on structure, clarity, punctuation, and grammar, and the appropriate use of source material.
