Kidney Dialysis Patients:

The production of a critical chemical solution used during kidney dialysis has been delayedbecause one of the two facilities that manufacture the solution was destroyed by a massive fire. As a result, hospitals and clinics are struggling to provide care to kidney dialysis patients awaiting a kidney transplant. As Chief Nephrologist (kidney doctor) at your hospital, you mustcreate a dialysis schedule that will treat the greatest number of dialysis patients using the limited supply of the chemical solutionavailable. After considering the needs (frequency and duration of treatment) of all 200 dialysis patients, you realize that it is impossible to fully treat all the patients using the 10dialysis machines the hospital owns. Half of the patients require dialysis less frequently(1 to 3 days a week) and for shorter durations(2 to 4 hours) becausethey are younger, stronger, and at a lowerrisk of suffering total kidney failure in the near future; however, interruptions to their treatment can have a long-term, negative impact on their condition. The other half of the patients require dialysis more frequently(4 to 7 days a week)and for longer durations(6 to 10 hours)because they areolder, weaker, and at a higherrisk of suffering total kidney failurein the near future; furthermore, interruptions to their treatment can have a significant, negative impact on their condition including total kidney failure and death. You must decide how to best treatall of the kidney dialysispatients.

Read the parargraph.

It is important to note that each decision will result in negative consequences for one or more individuals in a scenario; therefore, your decisions CANNOTbe based on an "and everyone lived" or "and they all lived happily ever after" goal. In the real world, such decisions rarely produce the expected results, and in the endthey harm more people, especially the ones who do not deserve it.

Write a paper that includes the following items:

  • For each decision made within the three ethical frameworks
    • Describe the decision you made
    • Explain the effect of the decision on the people involved in the scenario(Positive or Negative consequences, live or die, healthy or sick, etc.)
    • Explain how society might judge your decision
  • Explain why your decisions changed depending on which ethical frameworkwasused to evaluate the scenario.
  • Explainwhich of your threedecisionswould be your preferreddecision if the scenario were real
  • Explain whetheror not the ethical framework responsible for your preferreddecision would be the best ethical framework to evaluatethe realscenariosyouencounterinyour everydaylife
