Director's concept

Since it is a tragicomedy, the theme that I want to focus to my audience is the combination and contradiction of the two opposite moods, sadness and happiness. With that, I want to emphasize the complexity of relationships, a woman (Lane) who is left by her cheating husband (Charlie) for his soul mate (Ana). I want to convince the audience that even with tragedies in the play, like, battling cancer, a dying soul mate, a cheating husband and death, there can still be comedy in it. The humor, mostly coming from Matilde's jokes and the way she express herself along with the over exaggeration of Virginia's character can lighten up the depressing mood in the play and make the struggle less serious and less painful to see. The main action of the play would be when Lane finds out about Ana, as that is when the conflict starts and the tragedy begins. The rest of the play shows how Lane struggles to accept the fact that her husband has left her for his soul mate. Another important scene would be when Lane swallowing her pride, as she plays the role of a doctor, instead of an ex-wife to treat Ana at her house, as Ana refuses to go to the hospital. This is important because it is one of the toughest decisions for one to make. The play is mostly set in modern day America in Lane's house, which is all white, far away from the city but close to the ocean. In the performance, Lane's living room would be the main setting of the stage. There will be a balcony above Lane's living room, which would be Ana's balcony. Lane's living room will be transformed into a hospital, where Charlie performs a surgery on Ana. When Matilde tells a story about her parents, the stage lights will go dim and a spotlight will be pointing towards Matilde, as she tells the story. Matilde's parents in the flashbacks would be performing on the same stage as Matilde, as she is telling the story. The overall mood of the play is cheerful, as the jokes will lighten up the depressing tragedies. This play is relevant today, as it deals with real issues, like battling cancer, a cheating husband, how one manage a loss, death and the diversity of languages and culture.
