Culture Jam is a manifesto against what author Kalle Lasn views as the hijacking of culture by corporate interests and consumerism. If you disagree with Lasn, you may have had more optimistic thoughts about popular culture as you read. If you found yourself agreeing with Lasn, perhaps you nevertheless recall positive elements of popular culture on which to build changes in society and culture. In this Application, you will discuss the influences, or ripple effect, of popular culture and its potential positive effects.

To prepare for this Application:

  • Identify the ways in which popular culture and its texts affect society.
  • Reflecton the positive effects of popular culture and its texts and the larger perceptions popular culture generates.

THE ASSIGNMENT:

  • Compose a 1- to 2-page paper in which you do the following:
  • Assess the positive effects of modern popular culture and its texts on society.
  • Determine whether media affect society or society affects media.
  • Support your assertions by making at least 3 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.
