I was adopted just a few weeks old and was raised in a very loving and nurturing family. I honestly, was very blessed with the family I "ended up with!" My sister was also adopted but from a different family. We both knew that we were adopted at a young age, it was never some secret that we were told later on in life, and it was something we knew. I realized I was gay at a young age, I didn't know "what it was" but I knew that I was "different" then other kids. When I finally did "come out" at age 17, it wasn't a very big thing or a big deal with my family. If I knew it wasn't going to be this dramatic scene I had played out in my mind, I wouldn't have waited as long as I did.

My family, immediate and extended, has always been very comfortable with the "gay thing." I have brought boyfriends to family functions and while I was engaged for a short period of time (the relationship sadly ended) my family was very involved with ideas and plans for the wedding. So, to sum it up, my family has never viewed me as different because of being gay, it is just something that is.

My family has never thought any differently with me watching my little cousins or how my sexuality would make me unsuitable to care for them as some people would think. I have read, heard, and know people that were pretty much kicked out of the family for being gay and haven't talked to family members in several years. Which is why I feel very blessed that I did end up with the family that I did, another family sadly might not have been as "comfortable" with such a subject.

My topic choice is obviously a very personal subject to me. Being both gay and adopted my opinion on the subject is pretty strong. I also at a later point in my life would like to adopt which makes the topic much more relevant in my life. I've always want ed to have kids.
