0.5g of Olive Oil and Polypropylene Glycol (unknown amount mixed) were mixed together. This was poured through a pre-soaked silica gel open column chromatography tube, that was soaked with 5mL of dichloromethane. The contents of the mix were then poured into the column, followed bya rinsing of the mixture container with 2mL of dichloromethane. The sample was eluted with 10mL of dichloromethane. Contents were captured in a vial with two boiling stones. We switched our vial with a new one + two boiling stones, and eluted 10mL of methanol into the column. Both vials were heated and IR spectra ran. Dichloromethane showed residue of the Olive Oil and Methanol showed reside of the Polypropyplene Glycol. Question: How do I find the weight percent of each component in the original mixture and would this affect the outcome if Methanol had been used in place of the dichloromethane? Product weight of Oil: 0.11g & Product weight of Polypropylene Glycol : 0.19g.
