Assignment sheet for writing project on Jay Dolan's Irish Americans, Length five to seven pages, double-spaced.

Directions: This review asks you to do a selective summary of Dolan, Based on some specific points.

The first step is to choose One of the three waves of Irish immigration to North America prior to 1900. These are Ulster, Irish Enlightenment and Irish Famine immigrants. For your choice, please address how Dolan treats its story:

1. Why did they leave Ireland?
2. How did they chose the place in the colonies ( states after 1776) where they settled?
3. How did the immigrants of your wave attempt to earn a living?
4. Did your wave participate in politics, and how?
5. How did your wave feel about revolutions and Civil Wars?

In the second part of your review, you will pick One of the four aspects of the Irish Catholic Devotional revolution: authority, sin, ritual and the miraculous, and discuss two issues. First, how does Dolan think Catholics lived out that aspect, and second, how did other Americans react to that practice?

In the third part of your review, you will analyze what Dolan regards as One virtue and One defect of the Tammany Hall political machine in New York City in the nineteenth century.

Fourth, you will comment on whether Dolan thinks the American involvement in the Irish peace agreement of 1998 was an attempt to make Ireland become more like the United States in the area of religious freedom.
