Student Role Assignment: Proponent/Former Medicaid Recipient

Mock Legislative Hearing Instructions.

Students will participate in a mock legislative hearing during class session. The purpose of the exercise is to give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned about communicating with legislators on a current issue. All students will review the "mock: senate bill containing general information about the state work requirements for Medicaid enrollees (SB 8910). Each student is assigned a role and will have 3-5 minutes to give oral testimony to a panel of legislators, stating their position on the proposed legislation. You may explore/research other resource material to support your assigned position. But it is not expected that you spend a lot of time doing so. It is not expected that you would be fully informed on all the nuances on the topic. Review examples of testimonials available on the course site under Week 5 for creating your own model statement.

It is important that you put yourself in the assigned role; dress the part. Be professional; convince the audience that you are that person you are portraying. Bring that voice in your testimony to the legislators. Tell them why you support or oppose the bill. State what changes you would like to see in the bill, or what needs to remain. Be succinct, clear and straightforward. Stay in your role the entire time. If you need to modify the role a bit to make it more real for you, that is fine. Prepare your written testimony, and have copies for the panel of legislators.

Note: Some students will be assigned roles in support of the legislation, while other students will oppose the legislation. For purposes of the exercise, create your testimony based on your assigned role, and not your person convictions.
