Gogh and Komarov

To look art through two different eyes is a challenging adventure. However, our taste of art might conflict itself in the next day, or even during the critique process. Three weeks ago, when we had the essay rubric I was under the influence of hate-love relation with most of the paintings. They look beautiful and glamorous, but some might be too realistic or too beautiful; as myself intense amount of beauty bothers my eyes, too much of logic either! Therefore, I had this genius full of madness invading my chaotic nervous system picturizing his mad strokes and faint reflected lightning of his surface. After this wild whirlpool, I noticed that we should have two artists. The first tornado was Vincent Van Gogh, and the second artist is Vitali Komarov. Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat of Gogh, and Self-PortraitWinter,2006of Komarovare the pieces that will be illustrated in details in two different categories; elements such as color, attributes, and texture; second category is principle; such as harmony/unity, methods; repetition, , in the sum I will discuss the difference of both on the viewers' emotions though images are similar!

The iconic tortured Dutch artist who chopped his ear as a Christmas gift; who sold one painting in his entire life is such an extraordinary painter to focus on his breathtaking pieces (Van Gogh's Ear). Vincent Van Gogh's unique art was an assistant to create the modern movements from Fauvism to Abstract Expressionism (Van Gogh, a Study of His Life and Work). After examining his paintings, his piece Self Portrait with Grey Felt Hat is a brilliant example to compare different usages of elements and principles. In this piece that was painted in winter 1887-88 has special creation of the color element because Gogh opposed the color wheel. He used blues against oranges, and reds against greens in the eyeballs.

Gogh's chosen colors intensify each other, to illustrate more, the red faints, so the purple looks different like bluish pigment, which leads us to a contrast that weakens the brightness of yellow (Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat- Van Gogh Museum). The Dutch artist also focused on having shades more than tints. Most of the picture has shades which awkwardly have high levels of saturation and brightness. Furthermore, what makes Gogh's art special is the texture of the canvas, having bold strokes and visibly and physically touched are deliberately calling forgotten rage and fury. The tactile surface speaks up and communicate with the viewer more than the colors. Gogh's texture is like fire flames. They are bright, but they are valueless if they were not touched; the heat gives it value. On the other hand, Gogh had different definitions of harmony/unity in his work.

The harmony of his could be created by the viewer; pointillists, not the artist, the more you able to blend colors in your brain, the more you can see how the canvas unites and lights up (Vincent Van Gogh Biography, Art, and Analysis of Works). The last important principle is repetition method is dominant in the piece, repetition of the mad strokes on the background gives a feeling of dizzy spiral movement. You can indeed have an emotional or physical impact on you after focusing in this painting for ten minutes.

After searching for an artist, that follows the Fauvism, or Abstract expressionism I found the Russia-born artist Vitali Komarov whose art is traced pieces of Gogh's and developed with new techniques and vision of color (About Vitali Komarov). His piece Self-PortraitWinter,2006 is the modern copy of Self-Portrait with Felt Hat,1888however the overall image looks the same, the feelings are not. Comparing Komarov's colors with Gogh's will lead us to a sum that says Komarov's colors are tertiary and the contrast with the painted background is not hegemonic; the opposite of Gogh's piece, the background pops up even the foreground is bright. Furthermore, the usages of tints and mixing white with most of the used colors does give the painting cold feeling, but the tints are faint and do not catch the viewer's vision comparing the Dutch artist. The tints are a factor that smash the saturation of the piece. To add more, the texture of Komarov's is a littlesoft. The brush strokes present, but are not as mad as Gogh's. Speaking of principles, the tints have brilliantly helped to unite and create the harmony of the piece. Unlike, Gogh's shades created the harmony and the intensity of reaction, Komarov's is the opposite, it sends faint signals more that tightness. On the other side, the method of repetition was partially ignored and this factor could be a reason forthese cold, and faint emotions toward this piece. Movements because of reputation gives life to dead pieces, however, this possibility was not the focus in his piece (Vitali Komarov Art).

In conclusion, fighting with a decision who is the best artist is not an easy answer. However, considering some historical factors that made of the fame of Van Gogh could be the reason behind my eagerness toward studying and collecting the art of his. Regardless of his mad history, I believe Van Gogh's mental instability has promoted his wild imagination and this is a main reason of his uniqueness (Van Gogh, a Study of His Life and Work). On the other hand, Komarov was a hundred percent a copy of Van Gogh's art. However, remembering the soft life he has does not credit him for any fame even after death. I, myself, can receive different emotional reaction when I see three important factors such color, brush strokes, and biography regardless of the content. To sum up, art could be a show of personal admiration more than abilities and that what makes Freda Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, and Edvard Munch special artists than others!
