Global Relationships: Yesterday and Today

The British ally with the French!

The Germans ally with the Austrians!

The French ally with the Russians!

This was the the news pre-World War I when nations began to take sides. Each promised to come to one another's aid at the first act of aggression and to fight together. Now, after 100 years who is on whose side? Do current relationships reflect the past, or have they changed?

For your Discussion this week, you will assess how past relationships influence current global relationships.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapter 7 (pp. 96-103) and Chapter 8 (pp. 105-118) in this week's Learning Resources. Also review the articles by Barron, O'Hara & Heffernan, and Share in this week's Learning Resources to understand the importance of strategic relationship building around the turn of the century.

Consider which nations decided to ally and came to one another's aid in response to aggression in World War I, and compare those relationships to the ones that exist today.

Think about global networks that formed and relationships that developed, including those among Asian countries, and how they continue to have an influence on relationships today.

Reflect on the world's current conflicts. Which nations have joined together to fight? How have these relationships stayed the same or changed from those of the period between 1900-1945 and why?

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 2 - 3 paragraphs assessing how international/global relationships during World War I have influenced current international/global relationships. Support your assertions by making at least 2 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.
