For problems which require calculations, all calculations need to be shown with units.

1. Draw Lewis dot diagrams for the following simple ions,

2. Draw the molecule C6H6 using dots to represent electrons

3. What are the electron configurations of Ca and S (i.e. 1s22...)?

4. Find three items in your pantry or in a store that contain the surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium dodecyl sulfate. Provide the product name and what it's used for.

5. Look up the atomic radius of the elements below in their neutral state and their most common charged state and put in a table.

A) alkali metals

B) Halogens

6. For problem #5 plot radius vs atomic mass for both groups and the common ions of each groups elements. (There will be 4 plots). This can easily be accomplished in Excel.

7. Provide the formulas and names of the compounds that can be made by combining the elements in each set in different ratios.

A) N and O

B) N and H

8. Using bond energies, calculate the change in enthalpy(?rxnH) for the reaction below CH4(g) + 2O2(g) -> 2H2O(l) + CO2(g)

9. Look up the calorie content for a cereal and provide the cereal name and the energy content in joules per serving. Provide the serving size

10. Look up the SDS (sometimes MSDS or SDS) for water, and methanol and try to summarize the toxic exposure levels for ingestion and skin contact. These are available online.
