POST 1:

During this period in England and the rest of Europe, society was divided into distinct social classes. In very broad terms at the top of the pyramid perched the royal circle and the aristocracy who derived their income from their vast landholdings. Below them was the merchant class - people who earned their money through business. Next were the craftsmen and finally the laborers. It was very difficult to move from one social class to another.

In the American colonies a similar structure also existed however there was the opportunity for social mobility. How you experienced life in the American colonies very much depended upon where you lived, your socio-economic status, and your intellectual and religious views.

If you were a young, single man or woman living in England in the mid-late 17th century (1650-1700) and you planned to come to America as an indentured servant, discuss what colony you would want to come to and why. Consider factors such as climate, social, political, and religious attitudes as well as the type of work you might be expected to do.

POST 2:

Today we frequently use the term "global economy" as if it were a new phenomenon that appeared only in the last 25 or 30 years. In the 17th century, the Spanish, French, Dutch, and English were all involved in trade and colonization that created a global economy.

The Spanish and French cultures were quite different from that of the English. Discus how those differences manifest themselves in the treatment/interaction with the Native Americans they encountered. Use specific examples to support your statements.

Next, with two other students discuss how these different national "foreign policy" approaches benefited or hindered the French & Spanish colonial economies.
