First, must choose a topic in which want to argue in research essay. Decide what you will argue about your topic. may decide to argue pro, con, or for some feature or aspect of the topic.
You will then present "proposal" for your research essay.
Your proposal should be an approximately 900 word essay with these essential elements.--
Paragraph 1: After finding out information on this topic, must be clear and complete thesis statement for your essay. After recording your thesis/claim, support it (generally, not in detail). *This thesis statement could work out to be your argument research essay's thesis statement; therefore, this can give you a good head start.
Paragraph 2: State what sources you anticipate using and what kinds of information you hope to find on your topic. (Choose good, credible sources. Check out the other page in the Assignments link for week 8 to see what consists of good, credible sources. I recommend using MCC Library's online databases to find great sources. Avoid using Wikipedia, facebook, chat rooms, non professional blogs, etc. at all costs.
Instead, use good books, journals/periodicals, .gov, websites, and .edu websites.)
Paragraph 3: State your reasons for choosing this topic. Provide detailed information on why this topic is relevant and worth your time to research and argue. What will the audience gain from reading your essay?
I will let you know if your proposal has been approved or disapproved. Once your proposal has been approved, you will need to start your argumentative research essay ASAP!
The topics you may choose from include:
1. Socialized Medicine
2. Partial Birth Abortion
3. School Uniforms
4. Outsourcing of American Jobs to China
5. Extended School Times for School Children First through Twelth Grades
6. Owning a Gun
7. The American Welfare System
You must argue either for or against the topic, or you can argue some aspect of the topic. What ever you choose, you must present an argument about one of these topics. This is not just an informative essay. You must present a good, credible argument.
Argument Research Essay Prompts and Specific Directions
Essay Length: The essay itself must be approximately 1500-1600 words with the Works Cited page as the last page of the report;
At least three credible sources must be used. (Wikipedia is NOT a credible source!)
The essay must be in MLA format with a Works Cited page.
A clear objective (not subjective---avoid first person point of view reporting) argument must be presented and supported in the essay. In-text citations must be used to cite sources within the essay.
Documentation:
One source should not be overused, have enough sources, make sure sources are current and do not contain too much personal opinion. No live interviews!
(Make sure you give credit to sources for ideas, order of ideas, and wording, even in the slightest degree!)
No more than 20% of the essay should be directly quoted. Most information from sources should be paraphrased and summarized.
