Fifty Miles from Tomorrow pages 80 - 160

In Fifty Miles from Tomorrow there are a lot more characters than in Man's Search for Meaning. Are any of them like people you know? Do you think you could be friends with any of them if you knew them? Think about this when you are reading. This will help you remember what you are reading better. It is another way for you to relate what you are reading to your own personal experiences.

Hensley has organized his book very differently than how Frankl organized Man's Search for Meaning. Why do you think he did this? Is it done to catch the readers' interest? Do you think he has a purpose for doing this? Also, the reason Hensley wrote this book is different than why Frankl and Blum wrote theirs. What do you think the different reasons are?

Write your reaction to the reading. Do you have an emotional reaction to this book? Does it make you feel happy, sad, depressed, exhilarated? Why? Is the message the author wants to convey important? Why or why not? Do you think the author could have improved how he conveyed his message? How? This reading log should also include your reaction to the reading. This is not a summary, but it should show what you think is good and what is bad about this reading. Is this reading valuable? Why or why not? Is it important? Why or why not?

If you do not think this author's writing is not important or valuable, you will need to explain why. Identify the key points with which you agree or disagree. You may not summarize; you need to give an explanation of your critique.

If you have difficulty with the reading, remember the SQ3R method from chapter one in Reading for Thinking.

Do not forget about expanding your vocabulary. This is required for every reading log. Select three new vocabulary words. Find their definitions and write them down. Then write an original sentence for each new vocabulary word.

Answer the following questions on a separate page. They should be typed.

2. Why was there no turning back for Hensley after he decided to go to a Baptist boarding school?

3. In some ways are your experiences as an international student similar to those of Hensley as a high school student in Tennessee?

4. How did being a student at George Washington University and working at the Bureau of Indian Affairs change Hensley? Explain your answer.

5. The ways that the whites gained control of the land from the native people in Alaska may be considered unethical. What is your opinion? Explain your answer.

6. What were Hensley's reasons for being angry? Are they reasons that would make you angry? Explain your answer.

7. How did being Iñupiat help Hensley as a politician?

8. Why would an excess of passion and a fundamentally optimistic outlook help Hensley succeed?
