Explanation of Assignments Reading Journal

One of my goals for this course is that each of you has a rich experience with the texts you're reading. One way to facilitate that is through asking probing questions while you read. To that end, I'm asking each of you to create an ongoing reading journal throughout the first four weeks of the course.

This journal should consist of 25 questions total, each given as a complete sentence and responded to in paragraph form. These questions should be probing and journalistic in nature, i.e. who, what, when, where, and most importantly why. The questions you ask should be seeking not just surface level answers, but significance - the reason why. Likewise, the responses should seek to provide meaning, significance, connection etc.

For example, "The temple prostitute instructs Enkidu to drink beer and break bread with humans after having had sex with him constantly for seven days. What does this suggest about the cultural values of the society that produced The Epic of Gilgamesh and what that society deems as human?" is an example of an excellent question.

As stated above, the responses should be given in paragraph form below the subsequent question in an ongoing Microsoft Word document. If you are using Pages or Google Docs, you must convert your document to PDF before submitting it on blackboard. The length of the responses will vary depending upon writing style, but I will assess for depth of response, and quoting and citing from the original text in your responses is favorable if such quotation is used to argue for a particular significance.
