Long essay would be a traditional essay which typically five paragraphs long. The first paragraph must introduce the topic and state the student's position or answer to the problem. It must contain between three to five complete sentences, comprising the thesis statement for the essay. The second, third and fourth paragraphs are the body paragraphs. Each and every body paragraph must contain between three to five sentences, comprising the topic sentence (first sentence of the body paragraph, states a main point which supports the thesis) and at least two to three specific exs per main point. The fifth and final paragraph must start with a restatement of the thesis. It must be three to five complete sentences, and comprise a brief summary or conclusion of the student's answer to the essay problem. This is essential, specifically in the survey courses, for students to give cites and footnotes for their work in untimed exams.
