Down Syndrome occurs when there is a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21, which alters the course of development. It is the most occurring chromosomal condition affecting one in every 691 babies in the United States. "There are three types of Down syndrome: trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) accounts for 95% of cases, translocation accounts for about 4%, and mosaicism accounts for about 1%. Down Syndrome syndrome will have cognitive delays, but can still become an intricate part of society.

The lesson plan I chose to use is in math, and it is for Pre-kindergarten aged children to learn about counting and number recognition. To modify this lesson, I would use Touch Math along with the flash cards. The students will be able to see, hear and feel the numbers to learn them. Since maintaining focus is typically challenging, I would have the student located close to the teacher desk away from as much distraction as possible.

I would work one on one with the student letting them feel the numbers as we discuss them. Holding up a flash card, I would say the number and ask the student to show me the same number using the touch math number in front of them. I would then ask them to feel the number and repeat the name. Speaking clearly, enunciating my words to them and asking open-ended questions to engage them in the activity. (Powell, Driver. 2013)
