Note: For most of these topics you will need to do some research in order to fulfill the requirements of the topic. You can use online or library sources. We understand that online sources are quicker to access, and there is nothing wrong with your using them. BUT, you have to give sources for everything you use, whether you are quoting or paraphrasing. In general, you should (1) be sure you understand the question - ask your tutorial leaders about that, if necessary; (2) do some research on the topic; (3) come to a conclusion - there are many possible answers to these questions; and (4) present your conclusion, which is, basically, your thesis. You should also, of course, carefully indicate the sources that have helped you reach your conclusion. These essay topics deal with major texts of different kinds, mainly because interpreting texts is at the centre of studies in the Humanities.

Write an essay on one of the following topics.

1. Heart of Darkness: Write an essay on some of many implications of the title of Conrad's novella.

2. Heart of Darkness: Write an essay on Conrad's representation of African/Congolese people in Heart of Darkness. Be as specific as possible (i.e., when and how are Africans represented) and make overall conclusions about what seem to be the attitudes of Conrad (or the text).
