Essay Assignment: English Writing Prompt
Choose one of the following and write at least 3 pages to respond. This essay should be written in MLA format. You will need to include in text parenthetical citations and a work cited page. The correct citation for works from our anthology is below. You will need to submit any notes and rough drafts that you have written with the final draft.
1. Write a characterization of one of the characters from one of the selections we have read thus far. Be sure to not only describe them physically, but give insight into their personality, morals, etc. by using specific examples from the text.
2. Is the central conflict of the Iliad an internal or an external one-that is, does the epic concern itself more with a conflict inside a person (or persons) or more with a conflict outside of a person (or persons), such as the war?
3. Oedipus blames Apollo for bringing his sorrow to completion but claims that the act of putting his eyes out was his own. Certainly there is a sense that Oedipus does not deserve his fate, but what, then, is he responsible for, and what does the audience learn from the experience of the play?
