Watch the video lecture and tutorials for this week (see below), and then do a simple sample size calculation based on the type of analysis you'd conduct in your study. You may calculate the effect size from previous literature (from your literature review), or make an assumption that it will be a small, medium, or large effect.

This exercise is meant to give you a sense of what is involved in determining the appropriate sample size for your study. Don't worry about understanding the math behind the calculations right now. This assignment's focus in on making and justifying assumptions about your primary outcomes measure for you study.

Before running your power calculation, identify the following inputs:

• Primary outcome measure for your study.

• Effect size for the identified primary outcome.

Once you run your power calculation attach the output into the journal, and address the following questions:

• What is the logic behind the amount of participants in the study?

• What was the effect size you used in your calculation? Why do you believe that to be a reasonable assumption of the effect you will see in your study?

• How many participants will need to be enrolled in each group of your study?

• What would be the downside of using a sample that is significantly larger or smaller than this?

This journal is a private conversation between you and your instructor. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about sample size here as well. It is important to understand what sample size you should be using for your research proposal and why.
