Evolution of Your Art Interpretation

Refer to the assigned reading from the textbook and required videos as examples of how to interpret works of art.

Select a contemporary work of art or architecture from the textbook, museum resources in Week One, or from the Bonus Images in your CourseMate digital resources.

Provide a brief analysis of the work of art using the questions art historians ask and the words art historians use. Consider the media (materials), methods, and subjects of the work of art, and the reflections of the region and Contemporary Art movement.

How do the political, philosophical, religious, and social contexts impact the art of today? How does Contemporary Art differ from Baroque Art, which you studied earlier in this course?

Now that you have seen how art evolves over time and throughout history, reflect upon how your interpretation of art has changed since you examined the Arnolfini Portrait in the "Post Your Introduction" Discussion in Week One. What differences are there between the ways you interpreted that work of art in Week One to your interpretation now? How will these changes impact the way you view art moving forward?

Your initial post must be at least 200 words in length.

Journal

Art Journal Week Five

Refer to the assigned reading from the textbook and required videos as examples of how to interpret works of art.

Select a work of art of your choice from any of the interactive museums provided in Week One, the CourseMate Bonus images, or from your local art museum. Contemplate the work of art and add your interpretation of the art, based on the characteristics of the corresponding movement, to your art journal (the Prezi started in Week One). Pay close attention to style, media (materials), methods, subjects and any other details that make this work significant, using appropriate art terminology. Be sure to include your personal reaction to the work of art and an image of the work. How do you perceive this work of art differently now compared to how you interpreted the artwork in your art journal from earlier weeks?

TIP: To fully contemplate the work of art using what you have learned about art and art appreciation, it is recommended that you examine the work of art for at least ten minutes, taking note of your reactions and observations throughout your examination. Use these notes to compose your journal entry.

Include an image of the work of art you have chosen and be sure to cite the work of art.

Please follow the basic modified APA style citation format in the APA Artwork Citations document to reference works of art.

Gallery Design

Your local art museum has asked you to design a gallery dedicated to works of art from one of the following movements:

• Renaissance
• Baroque
• Romanticism
• Impressionism
• Modernism

Using your outline from Week Four as reference, select one movement for the design of your gallery.

You will use Prezi to design your gallery. This program allows you to design your gallery as if you were guiding a visitor to each work of art. You may draw from resources in the textbook, the CourseMate Bonus Images, or digital image resources found in Week One that incorporate the characteristics significant of your chosen movement and time period. You may also choose to reflect back on your weekly art journal entries for any works of art relevant to this movement.

Registering to use Prezi is free, and it is highly recommended that you sign up as soon as possible and review the "Learning Prezi is easy" page and the various ways you can design your journal. You can review the Prezi's "Manual/FAQ" page for detailed information on using the application.

In your Prezi, include the following:

1. A title page/slide which includes the name of your gallery, your name, the course, your instructor's name, and the date submitted.

2. A brief introduction to your gallery, which includes a description of the movement and the time period to which your gallery is dedicated.

3. Six images of works of art that incorporate the characteristics significant to movement and time period. Along with each image of a work of art, include the citation for the work of art. A summary of how the media (materials), methods, and subject are significant to that time period and region, using appropriate art terminology.

4. A summary of how iconographic, historical, political, philosophical, religious, and social factors of the movement are reflected in the work of art.

5. A references page/slide. You must include at least three scholarly sources in addition to the image references. The ProQuest and Credo Reference databases in the Ashford Online Library are helpful sources of information, as are the museum resources provided in Week One. To locate ProQuest and Credo Reference, visit the Ashford Online Library through the tab on the left navigation toolbar and select "Databases by Subject" and then "Visual and Performing Arts."

Cite your sources according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.
