Read Clarence Darrow's "Crime and Criminals: Address to the Prisoners in the Chicago Jail." This handout is a condensed version of a lengthier online reading. Click here to read the handout.
Draft a persuasive response (500 words minimum) that expresses your opinion about Darrow's point of view. Specifically address the following two points in Darrow's address.
"The people here [jail] can no more help being here than the people outside can avoid being outside. I do not believe that people are in jail because they deserve to be. They are in jail simply because they cannot avoid it on account of circumstances which are entirely beyond their control and for which they are in no way responsible."
"First and last, people are sent to jail because they are poor."
Agree or disagree with Darrow, but take a firm stand in your thesis.

Develop a thesis for Formal Essay 3 and underline it in the introductory paragraph of your essay. Before developing a thesis (argument, opinion) for your essay, click here to read "A Word about the Thesis."
Since this is an online course, the sources for all essays that require research must be online. As stated in the "Instructor Addendum to the Syllabus," sources must be no more than five years old unless instructed otherwise. Ask the instructor about exceptions.
Your response must be a minimum of 500 words. The Works Cited page is not included in the word count. Identify this assignment as "Formal Essay 3."
Paragraph divisions provide transition, clarity, and organization to an essay. The essay must include a minimum of five, well-developed paragraphs: introductory paragraph that includes the thesis, three supporting paragraphs (minimum), and concluding paragraph.
Begin the Works Cited page at the end of your essay. The page should be entitled Works Cited centered at the top of the page, followed by a list of the citations, correctly formatted. The Works Cited page must be numbered. For example, if the last page of the text of your essay is 2, then the Works Cited page will begin on Page 3.
In this assignment, use one direct quotation from each source. Direct quotations may be no more than 10 lines (accumulative).
Do not submit essays or a research paper in which a large part is quoted material. I want your writing based on your research.
