Discussion- Comparing Civilizations

The cultures of the Americas developed in isolation from other early societies. Nevertheless, they built elaborate cultures, developing agricultural systems that supported large populations, and establishing political institutions to rule large empires. We know less about these cultures because for the most part, we lack written records, but the archaeological findings indicate that they were complex and developed rich cultural traditions. Although the Americas developed in isolation from other early civilizations that have been examined in previous chapters, they shared many characteristics. This discussion will require students to compare a civilization from the New World, with one from the Old World.

In order to prepare for this discussion you must first complete the following readings.

• Read Chapter 6, and review the relevant Chapters 1 to 5, which discuss the second civilization you have chosen.
• Read The Creation of the World: A Mayan View on pg 150.
• Read Markets and Merchandise in Aztec Mexico on pg. 154.
• Read Virgins with Red Cheeks on pg. 162.

1. If you agree with the statement, select ONE civilization in the Americas and compare it with any ONE specific civilization discussed in the previous chapters, including but not limited to the Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Persian, Mesopotamian, Indian, or Chinese civilizations.

• Directly and completely respond to the question that you select. Clearly and accurately explain your answer based on factual information contained in the readings. Make sure that all statements are supported with facts from the readings.

• Students must respond to at least one fellow student's posting, and discuss the reason(s) for their agreement or disagreement with the arguments that are presented. You must address specific points, and support your response with facts from the readings or another source.

• Students can choose to respond to any posting, they do not have to respond to a posting that discusses the question they addressed.
