Radio Stations The approximate number of radio stations on the air for selected years from 1950 to 2000 is shown in the table.

x (year) 1950 1960 1970

y (stations) 2800 4100 6800

x (year) 1980 1990 2000

y (stations) 8600 10,800 12,600

Make a line graph of the data. Be sure to label both axes.

Discuss ways to estimate the number of radio stations on the air in 1975. Compare your estimates with the actual value of 7700 stations. Repeat this estimate for the 1985 and compare it to the actual value of 10,400. Discuss your results.

Substitute each x-value from the table into the equation y = 196x - 379,400 and determine the corresponding y-value. Do these y-values give reasonable approximations to the y-values in the table? Explain your answer.

Use y=196x -379,400 to estimate the number of radio stations on the air in 1975 and 1985. Compare the results to your answer in Exercise 2.
