Discovery of the double-helical structure of DNA was not solely the work of any one person. This week you are reading the account of this discovery by one of the major figures in this research, namely James Watson's The Double Helix, along with the book reviews that appeared shortly after the book was written. While some reviewers thought the book was the best account by a scientist of how modern science works, others were more negative and thought it was worst account possible of scientific research. This week's analytical assignment is to imagine that you have just finished reading The Double Helix, and decide to write a letter to the editor of the New York Times Book Review, in which you analyze the review you thought best, but criticize the one you thought worst. Devote an opening paragraph to your general reaction to Watson's account in the book, and then a paragraph each to the review you liked best, and another paragraph to the one you liked least. Finish you letter to the editor with a closing summary of your general appraisal of Watson's book.
