For this essay, you need to be deviant! Violate a social norm, then analyze the situation sociologically.

First, consider that a social norm is an expectation about what behavior, thoughts, or feelings are appropriate within a given group within a given context.

Context is key.

So, after you violate your social norm, examine the experience and discuss the following questions:

•Why was what you did deviant?

•Is it deviant in some contexts but not in others? Explain.

•What social institutions and structures determine the deviance of your norm violation?

•How did others react to your violation?

•How did you feel when engaging in this action?
