Delany and nationalism: According to Frederick Douglass, Delany thanked God for making him (Delaney) a black man. In what way(s) could Delaney be considered one of the first Black nationalists?  To answer this question, you must first know what a nationalist is.

Delany and colonization: State Delany's views on colonization. Did those views change? In what way(s)?  Answer specifically from the text.

Charlotte Forte Grimke: I included this author because her journal was not written to be published. Because of that, it gives a different perspective of her times than we have seen hitherto. What is at least one of those perspectives? Discuss other ways in which Grimke may be considered "different" from the previous authors discussed. Give specific instances. (Look especially in one of her letters.)

Jacob's slaves narrative: Jacob's work is the first slave narrative by a woman. How is her narrative different from those of men before her such as Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown?

Jacob's protagonist empowered: State ways that the text shows the protagonist using her sexuality to empower herself though still a slave.  Use specific instances from the text to support your answer.

Hypocrisy in Clotelle: List some specific instances of Christian hypocrisy regarding slavery from the excerpts in the text.  Note that adultery in and of itself is not Christian hypocrisy except those involved have professed that they are against adultery, then turn around and do it themselves.

Clotelle's marriage: Where does Clotelle get married? Based on the marriage, what could one assume about the difference in race relationships in that place and America at that time

How is Clotelle like/different from her mother? Who is Linwood? Devenant? How are they alike/different?

The animal trickster in the African American folktale evolved into another kind of trickster, the slave trickster.  Consider the characteristics of the animal trickster, and explain how the protagonist in "The Goophered Grapevine" is a type of slave trickster. 

Many students' first reaction to the story is that the black dialect is too difficult to read.  What did you think of the use of dialect in the story?
